Are you at risk for Osteoporosis?

Are you at risk for Osteoporosis?
Answer yes or no to the following questions to assess your risk for osteoporosis.  

  • I went through menopause naturally or due to a surgical or medial treatment before the age of 45.
  • Since I was 45 years of age I have broken a bone from falling from a sitting or standing height.
  • I have a close relative with osteoporosis.
  • I have lost more than one inch from my tallest height.
  • I weigh less than 125 pounds.
  • I smoke.
  • I drink more than two servings of alcohol several times a week.
  • I average less than three weigh bearing activities a week. Examples include twenty minutes or more walking, running, dancing, etc.
  • I avoid the sun or use sunscreen every time I go outside.
  • I eat less than two servings a day of dairy or green leafy vegetables or calcium-fortified foods.
  • I don’t take a calcium or vitamin D supplement.
  • I have a chronic lung disease, kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Cushing’s disease, liver disease, IBS, thyroid disease or cancer.
  • I take or have taken steroids, chemotherapy or immunosuppressants.
  • I’m older than 65 years of age.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, talk to your medical provider about your bone health. Don’t forget to take this questionnaire with you to assist in your discussion.
