Let?s face it: no woman likes to think about breast cancer. Or go through the breast cancer screening process. But it?s something that has to be done, even if you don?t have a history of breast cancer in your family.
With that in mind, here are some important reminders for all women.
The Breast Center at LMH strongly encourages women age 40 and older to follow the American Cancer Society’s recommendation to have a screening mammogram every year. A baseline mammogram should be obtained sometime between ages 35 and 39. Patients at high risk of breast cancer (especially those with a family history of the disease) should consult their health care provider about beginning annual screening mammograms prior to age 40.
The best way to detect breast cancer early is to combine annual mammograms with a yearly clinical breast examination (CBE) by an experienced health care provider. The Breast Center at Lawrence Memorial Hospital will work closely with your primary care physician to coordinate a comprehensive breast health regimen.
Performed on a regular basis, the breast self-examination (BSE) is a visual and manual examination that should be carried out on a monthly basis. Regular self-exams permit women to detect early changes and small lumps in the breast. If you discover any of these changes, notify your health care provider immediately..
