DON FAMBROUGH'S STORY

Former KU Coach Shares His Health Care Game Plan

Former University of Kansas football Coach Don Fambrough doesn’t shy away when asked to share his game plan in case health problems require hospitalization by him, his family or friends in Lawrence.

“If I’m facing some type of ailment,” Coach Fambrough said, “I’d start by talking to the folks at Lawrence Memorial Hospital (LMH) before checking in any place else.  I won’t give it a second thought.  There will be very few reasons anyone in Lawrence needs to look anywhere else.”

A Longview, Texas native, Coach Fambrough has devoted 31 years of his life to Jayhawk football and is proud to call Lawrence home.  Besides guiding the Hawks to two bowl games, Coach Fambrough was Big Eight Coach of the Year in 1981 with an 8-3 regular season record.  He also played on KU’s 1947 Orange Bowl team.

“If I’m facing some type of ailment,” Coach Fambrough said, “I’d start by talking to the folks at Lawrence Memorial Hospital (LMH) before checking in any place else.”

“I’ve always felt people in Lawrence are very fortunate to have Lawrence Memorial Hospital,” Coach Fambrough remarked.   “If I need medical care, chances are Lawrence Memorial can provide whatever services I need.  And if not, you can count on the staff to shoot straight and suggest the right place to go if you need highly specialized help available in just a few hospitals across the country.”

Besides the convenience of living just blocks away from LMH, Coach Fambrough said his previous hospitalizations there have resulted in first-name relationships with everyone from doctors to the hospital’s support staff.  Without exception, Coach Fambrough added, his confidence in LMH’s staff allows him to focus on getting well without the stressful fears patients frequently encounter when admitted to unfamiliar hospitals.

“You naturally are frightened and don’t know what to expect when illness strikes,” the only man to coach KU football twice commented. “I’ve been around here long enough that I just feel at home at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.  If you have a pain or something and call for a nurse, well they are there immediately.  They care about every patient and it shows.”
