Medical Oncology

Medical oncology is a specialty that focuses on treating and managing solid tumors, such as breast, lung and colon cancer, with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and/or hormone therapy. Because comprehensive cancer management often involves an interdisciplinary approach, medical oncologists frequently work in conjunction with radiation oncologists and surgeons.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses drugs that destroy cancer cells by interfering with their ability to grow and divide. Many different chemotherapy drugs and drug combinations are currently in use, and cancer research continues to lead to new anti-cancer drug developments. Chemotherapy is administered in a variety of ways:

  • Orally
  • Injected into a vein or artery
  • Injected into muscle or under the skin

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is designed to stimulate the immune system to fight disease. Such therapy consists of antibodies, hematopoietic growth factors for blood cell production, and other immune factors that are typically administered intravenously or under the skin.

Certain types of cancer are more responsive to immunotherapy than others. Your physician can determine if immunotherapy is right for you.

Targeted Therapy

Targeted therapy is designed to destroy and influence cancer cells without affecting normal, non-cancerous cells. Monoclonal antibodies are used to target proteins found on cancer cells or abnormal proteins that are fundamental to cancer cell growth.

Hormone Therapy

Hormones and cancer cells interact differently depending on the cancer type. In some cases hormones help cancer cells grow, while in some other cases hormones kill cancer cells or prohibit their growth. The appropriate type of hormone therapy is determined by many factors, and may involve taking medication, having surgery, or both. Our experts also help manage and treat side effects that come with taking hormone therapy medication.
