Robotically Assisted Surgery at LMH

Using the latest in computer and robotic technologies, LMH surgeons can treat a broader range of conditions with a minimally invasive approach. With the da Vinci® Surgical System now available at LMH, many procedures that were previously considered “major surgery” can now be performed with only a few tiny (1-2 cm) incisions.

How It Works

While seated at a console a few feet from the patient, the surgeon views a magnified, high-resolution, 3D image of the operative site inside the patient’s body. As the surgeon operates using electromechanically enhanced instruments at the console, a highly sophisticated computer interface scales and translates the surgeon’s hand movements in real time to its own miniaturized instruments. Automated system features like motion scaling and tremor reduction are specially designed to improve precision, dexterity and control.

Benefits for Patients

By making it possible to treat more conditions with minimally invasive surgery, robotically assisted procedures have the potential to decrease the patient’s hospital stay and speed recovery, enabling a quicker return to normal daily activities.

Safety for Patients

The da Vinci system can never be programmed to make decisions on its own or perform any surgical maneuvers without the surgeon's direct input via the console hand controls. Unlike “robotic surgery devices,” which are designed to perform entirely independent movements after being programmed by a surgeon, the da Vinci system offers robotically assisted surgical options. In other words, the entire procedure remains under the surgeon's direct, real-time control.

To date, tens of thousands of robotically assisted procedures have been performed nationwide, including general, urologic, gynecologic, transoral, cardiac, thoracoscopic, and thoracoscopically-assisted cardiac procedures.

Before you decide on surgery, discuss treatment options with your doctor. Understanding the risks of each treatment can help you make the best decision for your individual situation. Surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System may not be appropriate for every individual, and no benefits can be guaranteed since surgery is specific to each patient and procedure. Always ask your doctor about all treatment options, as well as their risks and benefits. No matter what type of surgery you need, LMH has the right technology and expertise for you.
