Certified Nurse Midwives at LMH
Many women prefer OB-GYN care from a midwife. At Lawrence OB-GYN Specialists, we provide that, too.
A common misconception about midwives is that they only provide obstetrical care. While pregnancy, labor and delivery are certainly integral parts of midwifery, certified nurse midwives also provide comprehensive gynecological care for women of all ages. From adolescent GYN care to preconception counseling, OB and even post-menopausal care, the midwives of Lawrence OB-GYN Specialists – just like our board-certified physicians – are here to care for women for life.
Our certified nurse midwives (CNMs) provide both gynecological and obstetrical health care services to women at every age, from adolescence throughout adulthood. Our CNMs perform pelvic exams, pap tests and other GYN services. They also prescribe medications (including birth control) and order lab tests as needed. CNMs – much like our OB-GYN physicians – are also an excellent resource for women’s health education and counseling.
For new and expectant moms, CNMs provide personalized prenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum care for patients with low-risk pregnancies. While they are advocates for women who want natural childbirth or minimal intervention, they also encourage women to make their own informed choices and fully support and serve women who prefer to have epidurals or other interventions in their birthing plans. Our CNMs deliver babies exclusively in the Family Birthing Center at LMH. If complications arise that require a Cesarean delivery, a physician from our practice will perform the procedure, with the patient’s CNM serving as a “first assist” to the physician.
Call 785-832-1424 for an appointment with one of our midwives at Lawrence OB-GYN Specialists. Appointment hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We are conveniently located on the third floor of the Lawrence Health Plaza, adjacent to the Family Birthing Center at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
While our physicians are on call 24 hours a day for women giving birth at the Family Birthing Center, CNMs receive physician assistance only if unexpected complications occur. Throughout the care plan, however, our CNMs and physicians work collaboratively to oversee the health and well-being of every patient. Our CNMs share our OB-GYN physicians’ evidence-based approach, and our practice-wide philosophy that women’s health care is most effective when it involves consultation, communication and collaboration across the care team.
Our Certified Nurse Midwives are members of the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM), a national association that shares a common goal with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG): to offer safe women’s health care through evidence-based practice models provided by OB-GYN physicians and nurse midwives.
