Pharmacy Department

LMH Pharmacy Clinical Intern Program

Mission Statement

To provide our clinical interns with a solid foundation in health-system pharmacy that fosters the development of a student into a pharmacist who values patient-centered pharmaceutical care.

History

The pharmacy department began to hire students to perform technical functions in 1999. One busy pharmacy day in 2003, two eager student technicians informed the pharmacy director, Patrick E. Parker, "We want to do more." Pat was intrigued and asked, "You are learning all about hospital pharmacy, please tell me more!" The students explained they found value in learning the technical aspects of pharmacy; however, desired hands-on clinical pharmacy experience to apply the knowledge they were learning in pharmacy school. It was the determination of those student technicians who planted the seed for the clinical intern program. Exceptional pharmacy leadership and clinical pharmacists within the program have successfully nurtured the seed into the valuable program that it is today.

Intern Positions

The program offers positions to Pharm.D. candidates from The University of Kansas School Of Pharmacy. In the spring prior to starting pharmacy school, interns are selected and commit to the program for the duration of pharmacy school.

Program Overview

All students are required to complete necessary technical training to develop a core understanding of hospital medication distribution. Students who demonstrate competency in required technical functions are eligible for promotion to clinical interns. Upon approval from the clinical pharmacy team, the interns are granted the privilege to be involved with the clinical services offered by the pharmacy department.
