Construction Projects
Phase Two (Fall 2006 - Fall 2008)
Work on a three-story East Tower to house the new emergency department, expanded ICU and maternity started in November 2006 with the closing of the hospital?s visitor entrance on Maine Street. To make it more convenient for patients and visitors entering the hospital on Arkansas Street, all patient and visitor parking has been relocated to the west side. The east parking lot on Maine Street is now reserved for emergency patients, Business Health Center clients, and hospital staff.
In Phase 2, the 80,000-square-foot East Tower will come to life. The new emergency department will be built on the first floor. The expansion planned nearly doubles the size of the existing department, allowing for more private treatment rooms. Moving from the north side of the hospital to the east gives the department more visibility and access for patients. The expansion of the emergency department also includes the addition of a covered ambulance bay. Work on this area began in November 2006 and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2007.
The ICU will occupy 27,000 square feet of the second floor of the East Tower and will have expanded patient rooms and new cardiac care rooms. The timeline for the ICU work is summer 2007 to summer 2008.
The third floor of the East Tower will house the maternity unit, which will expand with additional private post-partum rooms. The size of the post-C-section patient rooms will double, the nursery will be enlarged, and a new observation area will be available for patients who experience pre-term labor. An additional surgical suite for C-sections and expanded space for pre-admission and lactation education are also included. The new maternity care unit is expected to be open in early 2008.
An elevated helipad is included in Phase 2 construction plans. The helipad will be built on the hospital roof and is planned to be completed by year-end 2007.
