Massage Therapy

People living with cancer report that weekly massage improves their quality of life. They have more energy, are better able to perform daily activities and have less psychological distress.Benefits of Massage

  • Induces relaxation
  • Lowers stress levels
  • Eases anxiety
  • Helps improve mood
  • May decrease sense of isolation
  • May decrease pain
  • Positively affects the symptoms related to cancer and cancer treatments (nausea, fatigue and insomnia)

What to Expect
After your oncologist has approved you for massage, the sessions will take place in your treatment room in the Oncology Center. Massage is performed with you sitting comfortably in your recliner. No disrobing is necessary. The lighting in your room can be reduced and soft, relaxing music can be played. Massage sessions last 15 or 30 minutes.

You will decide with your doctor and massage therapist what is an appropriate time for you.

Gentle massage can be done to the feet, lower legs, hands and occasionally the head, neck or upper back. When no pressure can be tolerated, Subtle Energy Techniques can be used with many of the same benefits as massage. Massaging directly over a tumor site is not recommended. Deep tissue massage is not indicated for individuals with cancer.

Cost
15-minute session: $10
30-minute session: $20
