L. Stephens, M.D., M.A. (Wales)
Oncologist
Dr. Stephens has been
an oncologist since 1972, becoming certified in medical oncology
when the first national examination for this
specialty was offered by the American Board of Internal Medicine
in 1973. After graduating from medical school in 1965, he did internal
medicine training and a hematology fellowship at the University
of Kansas Medical Center, followed by an oncology fellowship at
the National Cancer Institute.
He joined the full-time
faculty at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1972. Before
leaving the institution in 1996, Dr. Stephens served as Director
of Clinical Oncology for a period of 15 years.
In 1990 and 1991 he spent a sabbatical year in Wales, receiving
a master’s degree in the Philosophy of Health Care.
Dr. Stephens was a frequent
participant and creator of new research protocols for the treatment
of cancer patients during his 24 years as a faculty member at KU.
He continues to have a clinical appointment at the University of
Kansas Medical Center and remains an active participant in the weekly
cancer conferences in Kansas City.
While consulting with
Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Dr. Stephens has been and continues
to be instrumental in developing The Oncology Center, both by seeing
patients and by contributing to the expansion of new staff and programs.
Currently he works part time seeing patients and serving as the
center’s Medical Director.
Celebrating almost 40
years in the medical profession, 30 of which are in oncology, Dr.
Stephens believes much of the progress in the treatment of cancer
patients can be attributed to patients’ willingness to participate
in research trials.
