Pelvic Pain Treatment

Pelvic pain is an umbrella term which generally refers to pain in the abdomen or pelvis that may have a negative impact on activities of daily living and quality of life. Some studies report that up to 39 percent of women of all ages report having some form of pelvic pain. Many patients seek help for many years until they receive correct diagnosis and proper treatment.

Common symptoms of pelvic pain:

  • Urgent and/or frequent urination
  • Pain with intercourse
  • Heavy feeling in the pelvis
  • Burning sensation at the vagina
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain, bloating or cramping
  • Tailbone pain
  • Pain with urination or defecation
  • Low back pain
  • Radiating leg pain

Our program is staffed by experienced physical therapists who are specially trained in the pelvic floor muscles and who are sensitive to issues surrounding pelvic pain. An individualized, step by step treatment program involving behavior modification and therapy for the pelvic floor muscles is designed to help reduce pain and restore a normal lifestyle.

Physical Therapy treatment may include:

  • Relaxation and specific breathing techniques for pain management
  • Manual therapy to release tight pelvic floor muscles
  • Exercises to strengthen weak and stretch tight muscles
  • Biofeedback, electrical stimulation and/or ultrasound
  • Appropriate forms of aerobic exercise
  • Bladder retraining if necessary
  • Education on lifestyle adaptations that may reduce pain
