Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have any programs for college students going into healthcare?

Yes! We welcome college students pursuing a degree in healthcare to volunteer at LMH. Volunteering gives students first-hand experience working with and around patients.

Do you have opportunities for job shadowing/observation at LMH?

Yes! LMH offers opportunities for students enrolled in a college program to shadow physicians and observe with staff members. Physician shadowing is reserved for upper-level college students (juniors and seniors) with at least a 3.5 GPA. Students enrolled in a college program (including freshman) can observe clinical staff. Observation hours are limited and dependent upon the availability of the physicians and staff.

Please contact Volunteer Services at (785)505-3146 to obtain the necessary paperwork for shadowing and/or observation hours.

NOTE: Shadowing and observation opportunities are only available to students enrolled in a college program. LMH does not offer these programs to middle school or high school students. See more information about volunteer opportunities for middle school and high school students.

Do you offer college internships?

Yes! Internships are set-up directly with the hospital department and a contract must be in place with the student’s university and the hospital. Please work directly with your university to arrange an internship at LMH. All interns are required to complete orientation and paperwork similar to volunteers.

What type of training will I receive?

All volunteers and interns are required to attend an orientation and read through material covering all policies in the hospital. College student and adult volunteers interested in working in a clinical area must also complete 16 training hours with our escort volunteers prior to placement in the clinical department.

Are there any short-term volunteer opportunities?

Due to the amount of training our volunteers receive regarding patient safety and confidentiality, LMH does not offer any short-term opportunities for the community. We encourage those interested to become a long-term volunteer and commit to at least 40 hours. This provides you with much more experience and knowledge of our organization and the healthcare world.

What are the standard requirements to volunteer at LMH?

We invite you to join us if you meet the following requirements:

  • You are at least 14 years of age
  • Enjoy learning new things and meeting new people
  • Have a special skill to share
  • Enjoy the satisfaction of supporting your community hospital
  • Have at least two hours per week to give back

What type of items does LMH accept as donations?

All in-kind donations must go through the LMH Endowment Association. Please call (785)505-3318 or (785)505-6134 directly to discuss donations.

May I bring in my donations and personally give them to patients?

No. Please contact the LMH Endowment Association at (785)505-3318 or (785)505-6134.

Who do I contact if I need more information about volunteering?

Please contact Allyson Leland at or call (785)505-3141.
