Volunteer Opportunities

Below is a listing of some of our areas where we utilize volunteers.  Please contact us for particular available shift times and days.  


4th Street Health Plaza Desk Volunteers

Location: 4th Street Health Plaza  

Volunteers will greet and assist people coming into the 4th Street building.  Volunteers in this area must be excellent customer service representatives and be able to assist people with wheelchairs.  We will provide training.  


Fit Assist

Location: Main Campus or LMH South

If you are active, upbeat, encouraging, and good with people one-on-one then consider helping in the LMH Fit Assist exercise program. Fit Assist volunteers are “exercise buddies” that lend a hand 2-3 times a week to someone needing physical assistance with an exercise routine. They provide positive coaching and feedback to the person they are helping. Hospital staff provide instruction and guidance to volunteers and exercisers. 



LMH Gift Shop 

Location: Main Campus

Lawrence’s best kept secret two years in a row!  Come and join the team in the LMH Gift Shop.  Volunteers operate the cash register, assist customers, check in and display merchandise.  This is a busy area that requires volunteers to be on their feet and moving around.  

Life Stories

Location: Main Campus

Volunteers interview patients, learning more about their likes, dislikes, family, work history, and other personal historical information.  Following the interview, the volunteer writes what they have learned into a story format and types it on the computer. Copies of the story are presented to the patient to take home to share with their families and friends.  The story is also kept in the patient chart for the caregivers to learn more about that patient.  Life Stories volunteers must have excellent listening skills and must be able type the story into the computer.  Volunteers schedule can be flexible


 Information Desk 

Location: Main Campus

Is providing comfort and support to people a passion for you?  Do you love to learn new things and want to keep your multi-tasking skills fine-tuned? We have information desk opportunities for customer service oriented people. Volunteers must be able and willing to use a computer and multi-line telephone. 


Mario’s Closet 

Location:  Main Campus

We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about assisting persons going through cancer treatment.  Mario’s Closet will provide personalized aesthetic services that can be difficult to find elsewhere in the community.  Volunteers will lend a compassionate ear and assist customers with retail purchases, assist customers by setting up times for wig fittings or prosthetic fittings.  


West Admissions Desk or Maine Street Desk

Location: Main Campus

Volunteers assist persons checking in for procedures.  Work closely with Admissions staff members.  Volunteers must have a pleasant and caring demeanor. 



Location: Main Campus

Wayfinders keep active and meet new people?  Our volunteer Wayfinders are always on the move, greeting hospital visitors and assisting them to their destinations within the hospital.  We have openings morning and early afternoon shifts.  

Patient Ambassador

Location: Main Campus

Our Patient Ambassadors act as the voices of the patient.  Volunteers visit with patients to find out how their stay is going as well as to provide a welcome and serve as a resource to the hospital Patient Advocate.  If you like to visit with people one-to-one and are a good listener.


Surgery Waiting Area

Location: Main Campus

Volunteers in the Surgery Waiting room are the liaison between the Surgery Department personnel and the waiting family members.  You would assist families by providing timely information, a good cup a coffee and a friendly smile.  This role is one where you have to be comfortable multi-tasking.  Excellent communication skills and the ability to graciously handle multiple requests at one time is a must.  




Location: Main Campus

Oncology Volunteers “Pamper the Patient and Support the staff”.  Volunteers in this are provide comfort to patients by providing a warm blanket, a drink or snack. They support the staff by preparing rooms between patient visits.  Assisting with supplies and running errands and then volunteers also will assist persons leaving the clinic in helping them to their vehicles.
