(Lawrence, KS)- Mario’s Closet, a specialty shop for a variety of free or low cost accessories for cancer patients, is on schedule to open in Summer of 2011 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. The Mario V. Chalmers Foundation, founded by Mario Chalmers, a member of the 2008 KU Men’s Basketball Championship team and a current player for the Miami Heat, donated $25,000 to LMH in 2010 to establish the first Mario’s Closet.
LMH is in the process of securing bids for the renovation of the former outpatient lab space. “We are so excited to be the home of Mario’s Closet,” said Gene Meyer, President & CEO. “The location of Mario’s Closet will be in close proximity to the Oncology Center of LMH. It will be very convenient for the patients to stop by and shop for items that will help them in their treatment.”
LMH has also been in preliminary discussions with local vendors to assist with services and products for the specialty shop. “We all know someone who has or is battling cancer,” said Kathy Clausing Willis, Vice President and Chief Development Officer. “We are excited at the possibility of partnering with local vendors to provide an emotional support for patients that are facing a difficult challenge.”Once opened, Mario’s Closet will be located on the first floor of LMH and it will be staffed by members of the LMH Auxiliary.
