Growing through the ranks at OrthoKansas

Growing up in Emporia, Payton Peters participated in a variety of activities. She showed horses competitively, played a number of sports, participated in 4-H and volunteered in the community. When she started working at OrthoKansas in 2017, Payton wasn’t quite sure what her future held but knew she was ready for a career in the medical field. She just wasn’t sure where that would lead.

“I started working at the front desk and that was a great beginning. I was able to learn how the clinic worked, got a foundation for learning about the body and it provided me an opportunity to get my foot in the door,” she said.

That experience helped guide Payton to become a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) through LMH Health’s partnership with Peaslee Tech. She earned her certification in early 2022 and is now the lead CCMA for Dr. James Huston.

“I began working with Dr. (Richard) Wendt and transitioned to Dr. Huston’s team in January. I really value his knowledge and the way he talks with and treats his patients,” she said. “He’s kind, compassionate and always willing to educate me when I have questions or come across something I haven’t seen before.”

Payton shared that working in the clinic prior to becoming a CCMA was beneficial, both for her and her patients.

“The knowledge I gained working at the front desk really helps in the clinic. In addition to providing medical care, I’m able to help educate patients about insurance processes and general office information,” she said. “Orthopedics is an ever changing field and I learn something new every day. That keeps the job interesting – there’s never a boring day at OrthoKansas.”

Outside the clinic, Payton is passionate about music. She is very active in the local music scene, volunteering at the Granada and at the amphitheater in Kansas City. But her clinic family always remains close to her heart.

“I was young when I started working in the clinic, so everyone at OrthoKansas really watched me grow up. I consider my coworkers some of best friends and will value those relationships forever,” she shared.
