Diabetes Education Center

The Diabetes Education Center at Lawrence Endocrinology offers individualized education and support for people living with Type 1, Type 2, gestational diabetes, or prediabetes. Certified educators help patients understand their condition, monitor blood sugar, manage medications, and reduce the risk of complications.

If you’ve been diagnosed with Type 1, or Type 2, gestational diabetes or prediabetes, you may be overwhelmed by information about this complex disease. Making healthy choices, monitoring your blood sugar, taking your medications, and staying physically active help reduce your risk for complications.

The Diabetes Education Center at Lawrence Endocrinology offers individualized care to help you understand your illness and take control of your overall health. Our certified diabetes care and education specialists, consisting of a registered nurse and a dietitian, provide education in individual and small group classes.

Education to manage and monitor your diabetes well

The Diabetes Education Center offers a wide range of resources and education on these topics:

  • The disease process
  • Individualized goal setting
  • Nutrition and meal planning
  • Managing diabetes alongside other health conditions
  • Preventing complications
  • Medications and monitoring
  • Physical activity
  • Preconception education and diabetes in pregnancy
  • Psychosocial effects of diabetes

Resources and support

  • Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMS)
  • Insulin pump and sensor training taught by a certified pump trainer
  • Other diabetes management strategies, such as insulin administration therapy

Support for Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes or Prediabetes

  • Free glucose monitoring for patients attending the program
  • Free monthly diabetes education support classes
  • Free quarterly prediabetes education classes

The Diabetes Education Center has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association for-Quality Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support. The program has maintained this credential since 2004, so you can be confident in your choice for diabetes education at LMH Health.


Certified Diabetes Education Specialists

James Florez, RN, CDCES 

James joined the LMH Diabetes Education Center in 2019. He worked as a registered nurse at North Kansas City Hospital on the telemetry and renal unit for 10 years, then at Hellman and Rosen Endocrinology, where he earned his diabetes educator certification in 2017.

He lives in Lawrence and enjoys hiking and backpacking in the mountains. He’s also an accomplished musician who loves playing music.

Kim McAuley, MS, RD, LD, CHES 

Kim joined the LMH Diabetes Education Center in 2026. She holds a bachelor’s degree in dietetics from Kansas State University and a master’s degree in health education from the University of Florida. She is a registered dietitian licensed in multiple states and a certified health education specialist.

Kim lives in Lawrence with her husband and their dog, Ellie. Outside the clinic, she enjoys walking her dog, ceramics and spending time outdoors.
