At LMH Health, you start with a phone call to one of our oncology nurse navigators. They listen, gather what we need, and schedule you with one of our board-certified medical oncologists for a thorough second-opinion consultation — close to home, often within the same week.

Close to Home
Many patients assume that cancer care means a long drive to Kansas City or Topeka, weeks of waiting and a confusing experience across multiple specialists. That isn’t always true. The LMH Health Cancer Center brings board-certified medical oncologists, multidisciplinary review and accredited cancer care to Lawrence — for the majority of cancer types and treatment regimens, you can stay close to home, with your family, and your support system intact.
A second opinion at LMH Health is the conversation that tells you whether that’s the right path for you. If it is, we’ll show you what your care here would look like. If your case truly requires a larger center, we’ll tell you that too — and help you get there with a clear plan.
How It Works
- Call an oncology nurse navigator. They’ll spend time with you on the phone, understanding your diagnosis, the treatment plan you’ve been offered, and what questions you want answered. They will also help you gather your pathology reports, imaging and treatment recommendations so the consultation is productive from minute one.
- Meet with a board-certified medical oncologist. Usually within the same week. She or he will review your case thoroughly and walk you through their assessment – what they agree with, what questions they’d want answered, and what treatment options they see for you.
- Leave with clarity. You’ll know whether your current plan is the right one, whether there are alternatives worth considering, and whether LMH Health is the right place for your care – or whether a larger center is. No pressure. No steering. Just a clear next step.

Meet Our Care Team
Luke Huerter, MD
Hematology
Dr. Luke Huerter earned his medical degree at the University of Kansas, where he also received a bachelor's degree in psychology. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics and a fellowship at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in hematology/oncology. Dr. Huerter is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology and is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Medical Association.
Dr. Huerter wants his patients to know that he values and believes that establishing a personal relationship with his patients and their families is vital to successful cancer treatment. He is dedicated to providing an open line of communication between himself, the team, the patient and their family. Dr. Huerter will always be an advocate for his patient’s cancer care and their overall health.
Jodi Palmer, MD
Hematology
Dr. Palmer is board certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology. She earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University of Kansas. She earned a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. She completed an internal medicine residency at Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego, California. Following that she completed a three-year hematology and oncology fellowship at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Benjamin Slane, MD
Radiation Oncology
Dr. Benjamin Slane earned an undergraduate degree in biology from Drake University. He earned a master’s degree in free radical and radiation biology and his medical degree from the University of Iowa. Dr. Slane completed a residency in radiation oncology at the University of Arizona. He is a member of the American Radium Society and the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.
Sharon E. Soule, MD
Hematology
Dr. Soule is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology. She earned her medical degree from the University of Kansas and a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology at Indiana University. While in Indiana she was a member of the Breast Cancer Program and her research focused on breast cancer treatment. She also served as director of Medical Oncology at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Jodie Barr, DO
Hematology
"One of my favorite parts about being an oncologist is being there for my patients. This is one of the most difficult times of their lives and being able to support them through their diagnosis and their survivorship is very rewarding."
Dr. Jodie Barr is board certified in internal medicine, hematology and oncology. She completed her undergraduate degree in chemistry at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana and earned her medical degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. Dr. Barr completed an internal medicine residency at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver and an oncology/hematology fellowship at the University of Kansas Cancer Center in Westwood. She is also the medical chairman of the LMH Health survivorship program.
Andrew Meyer, DO
Hematology
Dr. Andrew Meyer is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Arizona in Tucson and a medical degree from Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois. Dr. Meyer completed his internal medicine residency and hematology/oncology fellowship at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois.
He wants his patients to know that he values shared decision-making. Dr. Meyer strives to work alongside his patients using his clinical expertise combined with the preferences and comfort levels of his patients.
