Blood Clot Prevention
The LMH Health Heart Center Anticoagulation Clinic in Lawrence, Kansas, can help you and your doctor safely manage medication that lowers your risk of blood clots.
What’s Anticoagulation Therapy?
Anticoagulants, also known as blood thinners, help prevent blood clots by slowing the clotting process. They reduce the risk of stroke and other issues by preventing blood from clotting too quickly.
Am I At Risk for Blot Clots?
You may benefit from anticoagulation therapy if you use warfarin (Coumadin®) or other anticoagulants for:
- Blood clots in the legs or lungs
- Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
- Mechanical heart valve replacement
International Normalized Ratio (INR) Testing
To ensure your medication is working correctly, you may need a quick, painless fingerstick blood test to check your INR, which measures how fast your blood clots. Results are available right away and will be sent to your My Patient Portal and your prescribing doctor.
Blood Thinners & Surgery
If you need to stop your regular anticoagulant medication for surgery or another reason, we’ll help you safely switch to short-term blood thinners and manage your medication through the process. This is called bridging, and we’ll help you return to your regular anticoagulant after surgery.
