LMH Health receives Level IV Trauma Center designation
LMH Health has been designated a Level IV Trauma Center by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), recognizing the organization’s trauma program and strengthening access to emergency care for patients across the region.
The achievement follows a comprehensive review process conducted every three years to ensure hospitals meet standards established by the American College of Surgeons and endorsed by the Kansas Advisory Committee on Trauma. The review evaluates a hospital’s ability to provide effective trauma care through established clinical protocols, staff training, performance improvement efforts and available resources.
“This milestone reflects the dedication and collaboration of teams across LMH Health who worked together to strengthen our trauma program,” said Dr. Shelly Kortkamp, president and CEO of LMH Health. “Most importantly, it means patients in our community can feel confident that high-quality trauma care is available close to home when they need it most.”
Trauma centers play a critical role in treating patients with serious injuries. As a Level IV Trauma Center, LMH Health is equipped to provide rapid evaluation, resuscitation, stabilization and treatment for injured patients, while coordinating transfers when specialized services are needed.
“In trauma care, preparation matters long before a patient arrives in the Emergency Department,” said Dr. Ralph Park, trauma medical director at LMH Health. “This recognition demonstrates that we have the people, processes and resources in place to deliver timely, evidence-based care and help ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.”
Earning Level IV status required extensive work across multiple departments to strengthen trauma response procedures, enhance staff education, monitor patient outcomes and support ongoing quality improvement.
“This was truly a team effort,” said Rachel O’Keefe, trauma program manager at LMH Health. “From the Emergency Department and inpatient units to diagnostic services and leadership teams, many people contributed to building a program that meets state standards and supports safe, effective care for injured patients.”
Trauma center levels are based on a hospital’s capabilities, with Level I representing the highest level of trauma care available. Level IV trauma centers serve an important role within the statewide trauma system by providing initial treatment and stabilization for injured patients and ensuring appropriate coordination of care when advanced services are required.
According to KDHE, designated trauma centers help create an organized system of care that improves access to treatment and gives injured patients the best opportunity for recovery.
