Nurse navigator guides patients through joint replacement surgery

If you’re getting ready to undergo a total joint replacement at OrthoKansas, chances are that you’ve talked with Holly Dawson. Holly is a nurse navigator who guides all joint replacement patients through their surgical journey.

“I’m that direct contact for anyone undergoing these procedures. I’m here to help educate, facilitate care and advocate for my patients,” she said. “This might include coordinating pre-operative clearances and working to identify and reduce barriers that might delay surgery.”

Holly has worked at LMH Health since 2006 after being hired on following her medical assistant internship. A friend called her one day and shared how great it was to work at OrthoKansas and that an RN position was open.

“When I learned more about the nurse navigator role in 2018, I had to apply. It encompasses everything in nursing that I’m passionate about: patient care and advocacy, care coordination, problem solving and process improvement,” she said.

Holly’s work with her patients doesn’t end as soon as they undergo surgery. She makes sure each patient has a post-operative plan of care and if support isn’t lined up, she arranges those resources. And she checks in with each of her patients post-surgery to ensure they’re recovering well and not developing signs of post-op complications.

She’s also been an integral part of the team working to obtain advanced certifications from The Joint Commission, the oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in healthcare in the United States. The LMH Health OrthoKansas team earned advanced certification for total hip and knee replacements in 2020 and is in the process of becoming certified for total shoulder replacements.

“Achieving these certifications shows that our teams strive to continually improve patient care and complies with the highest national standards for safety and care,” Holly said. “This validates the hard work and exceptional care that our surgeons already provide.”

What’s the best thing about working at OrthoKansas? Holly shared it’s the exceptional team she gets to work with every day.

“It’s amazing to work with so many people that sincerely care about patients and the work they do,” she said. “Watching our patients regain mobility, return to activities they used to do and finally be in less pain is extremely rewarding.”
