These are areas that have volunteer openings currently. Volunteer needs change routinely. We will work with you to find a placement that fits department needs and your schedule once volunteer orientation is completed. 

4th Street Health Plaza Reception Desk 

Volunteers will greet and assist people coming into the 4th Street building.  Volunteers in this area must be excellent customer service representatives and be able to assist people with wheelchairs.  We will provide training. 

Tuesdays: 12:00 pm -4:00 pm

Wednesdays: 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm  

Thursdays: 8:00 am - 12:00 pm or 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Fridays: 8:00 am - 12:00 pm


Escort volunteers 

These volunteers transport patients by wheelchair when being admitted, going from department to department for tests or when being dismissed from the hospital.  They also make deliveries throughout the building and run errands.  This is an active area that requires volunteers to be in good physical condition and have the ability to quickly learn their way around the building.  Excellent customer service skills also a must.

Flex Volunteers

Do you like learning new things, working in new environments and want a flexible schedule?  We are looking for volunteers who can be trained in a variety of areas who can work a shift when existing volunteers are on vacation, ill, or when an area gets especially busy.  We are looking for active individuals who like challenge and novelty.  This specialty area requires a 6 to 9 month commitment due to training time involved. 


Information Desk 

Is providing comfort and support to people a passion for you?  Do you love to learn new things and want to keep your multi-tasking skills fine-tuned? We have information desk opportunities for customer service oriented people. Volunteers must be able and willing to use a computer and multi-line telephone.

LMH Health Gift Shop 

Volunteers are at the heart of our Gift Shop!  We invite you to come and join in on the fun, meet new people and assist customers.  Volunteers operate the cash register, check in and display merchandise.  This is a busy area that requires volunteers to be on their feet and moving around.  Comfort with computers is helpful. 

Mondays: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Tuesdays: 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm 

Fridays: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm  

Saturdays: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm or 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm


LMH South Admissions Reception Desk

Volunteers assist persons checking in for procedures.  Work closely with Admissions staff members.  Volunteers must have a pleasant and caring demeanor.

Mario’s Closet 

We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about assisting persons going through cancer treatment.  Mario’s Closet will provide personalized aesthetic services that can be difficult to find elsewhere in the community.  Volunteers will lend a compassionate ear and assist customers with retail purchases, assist customers by setting up times for wig fittings or prosthetic fittings.

Fit Assist

Locations: Main Campus, 325 Maine St., Lawrence, KS  or 
LMH South: 23rd St. & Kasold Drive, Lawrence, KS

If you are active, upbeat, encouraging, and good with people one-on-one then consider helping in the LMH Fit Assist exercise program. Fit Assist volunteers are “exercise buddies” that lend a hand 2-3 times a week to someone needing physical assistance with an exercise routine. They provide positive coaching and feedback to the person they are helping. Hospital staff provide instruction and guidance to volunteers and exercisers. 

Surgery Waiting Area

Volunteers in the Surgery Waiting room are the liaison between the Surgery Department personnel and the waiting family members.  You would assist families by providing timely information, a good cup a coffee and a friendly smile.  This role is one where you have to be comfortable multi-tasking.  Excellent communication skills and the ability to graciously handle multiple requests at one time is a must.

Maine Street Reception Desk 

Volunteers assist persons checking in for procedures.  Work closely with Admissions staff members and the Surgery Waiting volunteer role.  Volunteers must have a pleasant and caring demeanor and be comfortable in a fast paced environment.

Mondays: 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm 


Magazine Distributing Volunteer 

This role is to simply take a cart filled with magazines around to waiting rooms and deliver the most recent edition of magazines. Remove old magazines to make room for the new ones and reduce clutter in the waiting rooms.  This volunteer may also organize magazine and deliver brochures and pamphlets to waiting areas.  The role can be done most business days and will take about 1 to 1.5 hours.  

Arkansas Street Reception Desk 

Volunteers assist persons checking in for procedures.  Work closely with Admissions staff members.  Volunteers must have a pleasant and caring demeanor and be comfortable working closely with the public.

Mondays: 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Thursdays:  11:30 am - 3:00 pm or 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Saturdays:  8:00 am - 11:30 am


Note:  Clinical Department Placements such as those listed below require additional training beyond new volunteer orientation.

Once volunteer orientation is completed, the volunteer is required to complete a skills checklist and 16 hours in the patient transport service  before placement can be made in a clinical department.
Clinical Department placement is subject to openings at the time that the new volunteer is oriented and has completed training requirements.   

Nurse Volunteers

Are you a nurse (RN or LPN) without a place to care for patients?  If you have a current nursing license in the state of Kansas, have worked as a nurse for at least two years, and have a few hours to give a week, we have many opportunities for you to utilize your skills.  Come and join the Nurse Volunteer program and do the things that made you want to be a nurse in the first place.

Emergency Department

Assist patients by wheelchair, change bed linens, wipe off equipment, stock supplies, and round on patients. Fast-paced environment, must be able to multi-task well and be comfortable with a variety of patients and situations.

All Days: Multiple evening and weekend shifts open


Oncology Volunteers “Pamper the Patient and Support the staff”.  Volunteers in this provide comfort to patients by providing a warm blanket, a drink or snack. They support the staff by preparing rooms between patient visits.  Assisting with supplies and running errands and then volunteers also will assist persons leaving the clinic in helping them to their vehicles.
