LMH Health welcomes Aaron Doonan, MD
LMH Health welcomes interventional cardiologist Dr. Aaron Doonan to the team at Cardiovascular Specialists of Lawrence. He is board certified in cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology and internal medicine.

It was a prompt from his father that set Dr. Doonan on the path to his future career.
“During high school when I was working on a project about my future career, my father said that I should look into being a doctor,” he said. “It was a good recommendation, given where I am today.”
Dr. Doonan decided to become a cardiologist because he wanted to be part of hands-on interventions. He has a special interest in complex coronary artery disease and cardiogenic shock.
“There is something special about being a part of a patient’s recovery. It’s an amazing feeling to get to watch them interact with their family and do what they love.”
With the arrival of Dr. Doonan, LMH Health will have the capability to perform additional cardiac procedures including:
- Complex PCI: In this procedure, doctors insert a stent through a catheter to open blood vessels in the heart blocked by a buildup of plaque.
- Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL): This minimally-invasive procedure allows doctors to break up calcium deposits using sonic pressure waves.
- Orbital atherectomy: This technique pulverizes heavily calcified or thickened lesions.
- Rotational atherectomy: This procedure shaves off plaque using a rotating burr or drill placed on the tip of a catheter.
Dr. Doonan earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Washburn University and his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic and cardiology training at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Doonan is a member of the American Heart Association, and a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions.
