What Sports Medicine Treats

Sports medicine physicians specialize in the diagnosis and nonsurgical management of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions — the bones, joints, muscles and tendons that keep you moving. The vast majority of these injuries don’t require surgery, and our team’s goal is to get you back to full activity as safely and quickly as possible.

We treat athletes and active people of all ages for a number of issues, including:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Fractures
  • ACL, MCL, and other ligament injuries
  • Tendon injuries — including Achilles, patellar, and rotator cuff
  • Overuse and repetitive stress injuries
  • Concussions and head injuries
  • Shoulder injuries and impingement
  • Knee pain — acute injuries and chronic conditions
  • Return-to-play evaluation after illness or injury
  • Sports physicals for student-athletes

The Bridge Between Primary Care and Surgery

Sports medicine physicians occupy a distinct and valuable space in your care. They’re not your primary care physician, and they’re not orthopedic surgeons — they’re the specialists who handle the wide middle ground between those two.

If you’ve been managing an injury that hasn’t improved, if your primary care physician isn’t certain how to proceed, or if you’re wondering whether surgery is actually necessary, sports medicine is the right next step. Our physicians can handle the overwhelming majority of musculoskeletal conditions without surgical intervention, and when surgery genuinely is the right answer, they’ll help you get there with a clear plan and full confidence.

For severe injuries, fractures with significant trauma, or emergencies, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.

In-Office Procedures

In addition to evaluation and diagnosis, our sports medicine physicians perform a range of in-office procedures, including joint and tendon injections. No separate referral or facility visit required.

Sports Physicals

Student-athletes can see our sports medicine team for required sports physicals — including athletes who don’t yet have a primary care provider.
